5 "Music" Questions
« on: February 13, 2018, 02:19:55 pm »
Here are 5 Music questions for you to work on. There are no wrong answers, and you don't have to answer all 5 if you don't want to.

1. Name/link a genre/band/musician that your friends would be surprised to find out you liked.

2. What impacts do you see modern music having on the culture where you live?

3. When it comes to listening to songs, which is more important to you, the music or the lyrics? Care to give an example?

4. Is music food for the soul?

5. In 1999, an American High School was shot up by two students, 15 people died. Marilyn Manson was blamed because the students listened to his band, and dressed in Goth fashion. Do you think music, and the messages it contains can make people do things like this?

Some people look at things and wonder, why. I look at things that aren't there and wonder, why not?

1. Name/genre/band/musician that your friends would be surprised to find out you liked.
A musician that I like would surprise my friends is Taylor Swift.

2. What impacts do you see modern music having on the culture where you live?
Bad music makes great memes

3. When it comes to listening to songs, which is more important to you, the music or the lyrics? Care to give an example?
The music is more important to me, couldn't care for the lyrics. Bullet by Hollywood Undead is a great example. the song is a super happy upbeat tune, about suicide.

4. Is music food for the soul?
I would need one to know  :-\

5. In 1999, an American High School was shot up by two students, 15 people died. Marilyn Manson was blamed because the students listened to his band, and dressed in Goth fashion. Do you think music, and the messages it contains can make people do things like this?
No, i think people just need someone to blame

1. Name/link a genre/band/musician that your friends would be surprised to find out you liked.
I think it would be tough to shock my family with my musical tastes, but I doubt most of them know that I often listen to classical music after the gym.

2. What impacts do you see modern music having on the culture where you live?
I would say the most obvious is fashion. After that, maybe attitudes, because they're definitely effected by music.

3. When it comes to listening to songs, which is more important to you, the music or the lyrics? Care to give an example?
Depends on my mood. Sometimes I want to hear soulful lyrics, that are heartbreaking and true. Other times, I just wanna hear some ripping guitar solos and heavy drums.

4. Is music food for the soul?
Among many other things, yes. I really can be having a bad day, and music will brighten it up. I know it's cliche, but it's true.

5. In 1999, an American High School was shot up by two students, 15 people died. Marilyn Manson was blamed because the students listened to his band, and dressed in Goth fashion. Do you think music, and the messages it contains can make people do things like this?
This is hard, because it's a two way street. We are drawn to opinions and view points that are similar to ours. So there is some validity to the argument that music influences decisions, but I still think the fault lies at the feet of the person who commits the crime.
Some people look at things and wonder, why. I look at things that aren't there and wonder, why not?

1. Name/link a genre/band/musician that your friends would be surprised to find out you liked.

Honestly I don't think they'd be that surprised by any of them, but maybe Jorja Smith though I only like a couple of her songs

2. What impacts do you see modern music having on the culture where you live?

I feel like in different parts of the world this question would apply pretty well, but here in South East England there isnt that much music culture, people generally just listen to whats on the charts

3. When it comes to listening to songs, which is more important to you, the music or the lyrics? Care to give an example?

The music for sure, when I' going to the gym or I want to get pumped up before a match its all about the beat and having a quick flow, an example would be this song: (Link 1) as the lyrics are pretty **** for the most part but the beats great and I'm always listening to it before matches. Though on the other hand an artist like Joyner Lucas goes so deep into the lyrics that it'd be hard to argue that lyrics arent just as important in songs (Link 2), if you haven't listened to his stuff before I highly recommend it

4. Is music food for the soul?

Yeah, I feel like certain songs can make you feel certain ways and for many people serve as a comfort when times are tough

5. In 1999, an American High School was shot up by two students, 15 people died. Marilyn Manson was blamed because the students listened to his band, and dressed in Goth fashion. Do you think music, and the messages it contains can make people do things like this?

Some artists go really deep with lyrics, and I feel like they never really quite mean what they literally come out as but they're there to be perceived by any person in their own perspective, so no I don't think you could say that the Columbine shooting was down to that - I feel like the Columbine shooting was a result of deep-rooted problems growing up in both the boy's school lives and childhoods as well as their clear disregard for the sanctity of life.

2. What impacts do you see modern music having on the culture where you live?
-Well with the rise in kpop fans came kpop club at my school, which I would say is a positive impact cause it brings people with similar interests together.

3. When it comes to listening to songs, which is more important to you, the music or the lyrics? Care to give an example?
I think both are important, it depends on what mood youíre in. I love plain instrumental music which has no lyrics and some trap music that has little lyrics but to find as song that hasnít lyrics that speak to you is one of the best feelings ever.

4. Is music food for the soul?
-It most definitely is, music puts into words what you canít describe.

5. In 1999, an American High School was shot up by two students, 15 people died. Marilyn Manson was blamed because the students listened to his band, and dressed in Goth fashion. Do you think music, and the messages it contains can make people do things like this?
-I donít think so. These people were not in the right mind but that doesnít have anything to do with the music they listened to. Marilyn Manson has many fans who have never hurt others in this way.

Hmm one that my friends would be surprised by im not sure they would be surprised about my music i listen to almost everything since my family is a very musical one everything from classic to metal i listen to and i try to get my friends to listen too but one band thats out there is Pink Guy he is quite out there but i like the way he raps

2. What impacts do you see modern music having on the culture where you live?

Well for a guy who grew up with a family where everyone sang/played an instrument, with this knowledge looking at modern music which is mostly pop has killed the voice people no longer need to sing well or have a voice to be in the music industry most of these famous pop artists are using autotune and various pro tools to mask there real voice back before the 2000s people who sang did not need autotune to sound good. I feel like a majority of the generation has forgotten what real singing is and just think that all these pop artists are actually singing. When i listen to a guy like Kurt Cobain who sang his heart out full of emotion with his voice, he was amazing he did not need fancy chords or lyrics his voice did all of the explaining. In today's world people like that dont ever get anywhere near the top anymore only these crappy idols that teenage girls worship.

3. When it comes to listening to songs, which is more important to you, the music or the lyrics? Care to give an example?

Honestly depends on the genre of music i am listening as mentioned before i listen to all sorts of music when i listen to lyrics its usually a rap, or a sad rock song etc but when im listening to metal, dubstep, classical its more about the music than anything else.

4. Is music food for the soul?

Music is the universal language that we all speak  no matter where you come from or where you go people will be singing, whistling, humming, or tapping out the beat. music is not just the food it is the essence of the soul.

5. In 1999, an American High School was shot up by two students, 15 people died. Marilyn Manson was blamed because the students listened to his band, and dressed in Goth fashion. Do you think music, and the messages it contains can make people do things like this?

Well if we went back to the 1990s back when music artists like Nirvana, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains. Were the top of the charts my dad told me the week that Nirvana Nevermind Album came out you could not walk more than 20 feet without someone blasting it him being in College at that time it was just the times he grew up in. Of course when new music comes out there will always be the Moralists who will cause a panic saying this new music is bad it causes kids to do this and that. just like the Satanic Panic of the 80s, and the Red Scare. If someone does not like something they will try their hardest to believe it is bad even though it has no basis and is just paranoia from the older generation. To answer the question, No music does not cause people to do things like this Music can spread messages but no matter how dirty/violent a song can be it is not a cause of someone shooting up a school. The person I assume was already troubled and he could relate to the music he was listening to. The music was not telling him to shoot up a school, he came to that conclusion himself.
